"Non-fulfilled economic demands become political sooner or later"

About 200 people gathered in the Kiev Mini-Park of Minsk for the May Day rally, organized by the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions (known as BKDP).

The demands of the rally were purely socio-economic ones: "A worker should not be a beggar", "Utility tariffs – under public control!", "Give wages to workers and take taxes from rich ones!"

"If we put utility tariffs under public control in every city and every district, we'll see how much we overpay for them," Gennady Fedynich, the leader of the REP Trade Union, said in a speech. Ordinances Nos. 1, 5 and 29 must be cancelled; the basic worker's tariff rate should be at least 420 roubles, and the unemployment allowance – some 50-70% of the average salary."

"If economic demands are ignored, sooner or later they grow into political ones. Today, in every kitchen, after the third toast, people talk not love, but politics – that's the result of Belarusian regime," the union leader has summed up.
