The Minsk City Executive Committee refused to sanction pickets applied for by activists of the REP Trade Union for May 30 under the pretext that "other events" had been earlier planned right there and at the very same hours.
The venues applied for were the 50th October Anniversary Park, the Kiev Mini-Park and the Peoples' Friendship Park – the places appointed by the above Committee for holding mass events. Activists wanted to picket against the prosecution of independent trade unions in Belarus and with a demand to stop the criminal case against Gennady Fedynich and Igor Komlik.
All three applications were rejected by A. Krepak, Deputy Chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee, under the motive of "other events" that had been planned in the above venues. See the photos of what was really taking place at the above venues on the applied day and hours in the website www.praca-by.info.
"All reasons for refusing pickets will be sent to Geneva for the ILO session"
"We intend to appeal against the answers of the Minsk City Executive Committee and force the bureaucrats to explain why they had banned our pickets and lied about 'other events' which never took place," Yuri Belyakov, a legal inspector of the REP Trade Union, has commented.
