"Zavodskaya Pravda" back instead of "Zavodskaya Prokhodnaya"?
28.05.2010
The office equipment, information carriers, latest issues of trade-union bulletins and the seal of the primary union organization of the "Tsvetotron" Factory, confiscated on May 18 during a search at the office of the Brest regional representative office of the REP Trade Union, are still kept by the militia. The Trade Union regards it as a roughest interference into internal matters of the organization and plans to inform the International Labour Organization (ILO) about the incident in the near future. "According to the civil legislation, nobody has the right to interfere with the matters of a registered union organization," Zhanna Zaprivarina, head of legal service of the REP Trade Union, has commented the situation. "Our trade union was presented no charges and no claims, which could become a pretext of such militia's actions. Moreover, as reported by Zinaida Mikhnyuk, head of the Brest-based office, the search warrant ran literally as follows: "To make a search of the office of the GKGP." That is, as we assume, they meant the Civil Campaign 'Tell the Truth' (Russian abbreviation is GKGP). But the search was conducted in the office of our trade union, which is rented. Militiamen had no right to rush into the office, search it and confiscate the equipment, documents and the seal belonging to the trade union. I even don't say that it was all done without the presence of the responsible employee of the office. All these are roughest violations; as well as militia's continued keeping of confiscated things.
The incident was not without an anecdote. In the confiscation protocol the militiamen who made the search distorted the title of the trade-union bulletin – instead of "Zavodskaya Prokhodnaya" (Factory Checkpoint) they wrote "Zavodskaya Pravda" (Factory Truth). Trade-union activists are joking: "Now, even if they give the paper back, it'll be only 'Pravda'."
