Activists of "Studentskaya Rada" draft recommendations for higher school administrations
23.07.2010
Activists of the trade-union group of the Independent Radio and Electronic Workers' Union (REP) have decided not to stop on their achievements. After holding the rating named "Most Student-Friendly Higher School of Minsk-2010" and announcement of the winner, they started drafting recommendations for administrations of local higher educational establishments. Students hope to draw the officials' attention to solution of their problems. "It's necessary to address such issues like, for example, subjectivity in teachers' estimates, the freedom of speech in students' press, democratic character of students' organizations, including students' self-management in higher schools, and problems related to forcing students to participation in various actions, and, certainly, the students' living conditions and distribution of hostel places," Dmitri Gomenyuk, a trade union activist, noted in his conversation with the correspondent of the website praca-by.info. Activists of the trade-union group hope that their work will help to draw attention both of the public and managers of higher educational institutions to solving students' problems. "Presently, the work is underway of drafting individual recommendations for each of the 11 higher schools, the students of which took part in the poll," the activists report. "These recommendations will be disseminated among higher school administrations. We hope to receive at least some minimum feedback." Activists of the "Studentskaya Rada" plan to continue polling students and making a higher school rating in 2011. Let us remind you that the "Studentskaya Rada" (Students' Board) is registered as a union structure of the REP Independent Trade Union. At their conference on students' rights, held on June 13, activists of the trade-union group announced an initiative of setting up an independent students' trade union. According to the members of the group, the "Studentskaya Rada" is going to concentrate its efforts on human rights activities. In particular, they stand for cancellation of the mandatory distribution of higher school graduates.
